Grey is the default spool on most benches for good reason: it shows form and surface without the glare of white or the shadow-swallowing of black, which makes it the honest choice for test prints and design reviews. This is the standard CR-PLA, easy to run on any machine that takes PLA and forgiving of a first-time user. It accepts primer and paint readily, so a model that starts as a prototype can end up a finished piece. Engineering students and workshops buy it by the spool because most of what they print never needs to be a particular colour.
