The springs under a heated bed compress a little every time you level it, which is why a machine creeps out of true and wants the same adjustment again a week later. These silica columns take their place: firm enough to hold the setting, with just enough give for the adjustment knobs to work against. They are built to sit against a hot bed without sagging or perishing. A pack of four does one printer, and fitting them means lifting the bed off, swapping the springs for columns and levelling once. Most people find they rarely touch the knobs again afterwards.
