Optical scanners need features to lock onto, and a smooth or uniform surface gives them nothing — the scan drifts and the mesh comes back warped. Reflective markers give the scanner fixed reference points to align successive frames against. At 3mm these are the small ones, for detailed objects where a larger dot would cover something you need. Five sheets is enough for several jobs, and they lift off cleanly afterwards. Scatter them irregularly rather than in a grid so the software can tell one region from another.
